Mental Health Tech II, 3 North Inpatient Psychiatry, University of Louisville Hospital, Nights, Full Time


The Mental Health Tech participates

in the delivery of patient care to the psychiatric patient in crisis, under the

supervision of an RN. The MHT will assist in providing, monitoring, and

maintaining a safe, therapeutic milieu. The MHT will facilitate/ co-facilitate

a variety of programming activities including groups provided by members of the

interdisciplinary treatment team. Other responsibilities include specimen

collection, activities of daily living, behavioral management, crisis

intervention, and implementation of patients individualized treatment plans in

accordance with physician orders, hospital and unit specific policies and

procedures, and defined standards of patient care and clinical practice. The MHT

provides clinical patient care support in a caring, safe, and efficient manner,

under the direction of an RN. In collaboration with patients and families (as

defined by the patient) the MHT is responsible for the care of the patient. The

MHT adheres to and is supportive of the hospital the Department of Nursing’s,

mission and philosophy.

Essential Duties:

  • Facilitate and co-facilitate therapeutic groups.

  • Assembles and maintains appropriate equipment andsupplies to meet patient needs.

  • Monitor and maintain the therapeutic milieu.

  • Performs unit patient safety rounds every 15 minutes.

  • Participate in identification, management, andstabilization of crisis situations.

  • Interacts with employees, patient’s visitor physiciansand other customers in a manner that is perceived as courteous, helpful andpleasant.

  • Responds appropriately in lifesaving situations.

  • Assists with toileting and elimination needs forpatients.

  • Prepares patients for electro-convulsive therapy (ECT)

  • Measures and documents intake and output, heights andweights, and vital signs.

  • Assist in the implementation and documentation ofseclusion and restraint usage.

  • Collects urine, stool, and sputum specimens.

  • Performs and documents point-of-care testing.

  • Performs and documents patient mobility and exercise,and comfort, rest, and sleep care needs.

  • Performs and documents patient hygiene, grooming anddressing, skin and nail care, laundry, dietary, and toileting andelimination needs.

  • Assists with admitting, physical examination, safetysearches, transferring, and discharging patients.

  • Utilizes therapeutic communication technique to performand document interventions identified in the Interdisciplinary treatmentplan.

  • Assists in the implementation of unit programming andscheduled activities.

  • Participates in oncoming and off going shift reports.

  • Adheres to Universal precaution, infection control,OSHA, and other regulatory policies and procedures. Maintains safe workpractices and follows facility safety procedures.

  • Develops a therapeutic rapport with patients and theirfamilies

  • Completes other duties as assigned.



High School Graduate or equivalent.

Preferred: Completion of a recognized Clinical Assistant (CNA), Medical

Assistant or EMT Training Program, or Nursing Students who have completed

Fundamentals of Nursing Course from an accredited school of nursing.


One of the following is preferred:

Certification as a Nursing Assistant (C.N.A), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)

or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), must be current and in good standing

with state licensing board, or be enrolled in an accredited school of nursing

with completion of Fundamentals of Nursing Course. Medical terminology and

computer skills required. LPNs may apply.


American Heart Association

Healthcare Provider CPR Required.

  • For those hired after November 14,

2016, KentuckyOne Health will verify education required by the position,

through primary source verification, prior to beginning employment. Education

verification will also include the collection of a high school diploma or

equivalent, transcript, or other written validation of education.
