Sonographer, Ultrasound, Medical Center Jewish Northeast, PRN
for performing procedures to ensure quality patient care. Works with all age population in caring for
patients. This document is only a
description/performance appraisal that states the performance expectations of
this position and provides a tool for rating that performance. The major responsibilities have been listed
below. At times the employee may be assigned
the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care
appropriate to the age of the patients
1.1 Performsa comprehensive evaluation of neonates, pediatric, adolescent, adult andgeriatric patients to evaluate the physiological needs specific to the age ofthe patients served.
1.2 Demonstrates knowledge related to
the age appropriate behavior of neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and
geriatrics to evaluate the growth and development of the patient.
1.3 Demonstrates the ability to
provide medical treatment based tested knowledge related to the age specific
requirements of neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatric
1.4 Demonstrates proficiency in the
operation of equipment utilized to perform the essential functions of the job.
Performs procedures to ensure quality patient
Conducts patient examinations according to
established departmental procedures.
2.2 Demonstrates accurate anatomical positioning
and knowledge of ultrasound anatomy.
2.3 Performs and/or assists
physicians with special procedures utilizing special equipment.
2.4 Prepares imaging devices and
needed supplies in accordance with prescribed procedures.
As related to assigned areas:
Prepares and checks equipment accessories and supplies
Warms up equipment and checks operation at
beginning of each day.
Cleans and disinfects equipment after each use
Replaces axillary equipment after each use
Overall wipe down and reorganization of rooms at
end of each shift
- Follows room checklist for supplies at end of
each shift and replaces items according to posted list located in each room.
Observes patient and machine during procedure; always informs appropriate
nursing personnel of any changes in patient’s condition; regularly performs
basic nursing functions in regards to patient care.
Prepares and directs patients for
Verifies order in chart/requisitions
and documents clinical history prior to all examinations.
Checks the patient identification prior
to the exam.
Thoroughly explains the procedure to be
performed in order to facilitate cooperation and obtains signed consent form
prior to exam when required.
Demonstrates competence at all times

clothed and covered for the examination.
Explains post-procedure care to patient
after each examination.
Participates in hospital and department
quality assurance programs to ensure safety and satisfaction.

4.2 Provides radiation protection to patient,
staff and self according to prescribed safety standards.
4.2 Performs daily safety warm up and quality control checks for
each radiographic room/equipment assigned.
4.3 Regularly practices aseptic techniques as
necessary to prevent cross contamination to
patients/staff, and instruments.
Strictly obeys isolation and infection control procedures.
4.4 Demonstrates ability to conduct hospital disaster fire and
code evacuation policies.
4.5 Demonstrates a complete understanding of safety procedures
as evidenced by no employee incident form, attends to personal health affairs
to avoid conflict with work responsibilities.
Maintains professional development and
education for technical competency.
Attends the departmental in services as

Attends education, information and
training programs as assigned by the manager or Human Resources as documented

voltage current, and exposure time, selects proper film, and places proper
markers on cassettes, refers to department manuals as needed.
Maintains cleanliness of work

Licensure: Must be registered or eligible for American Registry of
Radiologic Technology, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, and or
Registered Vascular Technician. CPR/BLS required
Skills: Knowledge of x-ray
equipment, oral and written communication skills, and quick emergency skills.
